St Aloysius (Deemed To Be University) Mangalore in collaboration with St Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACAA) organised for the prison inmates of the District Prison in Mangalore a ten month duration Diploma Programme in “Herbal Medicines and Disease Prevention” from August 2024 to June 2025.
At the Convocation ceremony held inside the prison on 12 June 2025, Diploma Certificates were distributed to 25 successful trainees by the Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr Peter Paul Saldanha in the presence of the Vice Chancellor Rev Dr Praveen Martis SJ, the Prison Superintendent Mr B Suresh, University Registrar Dr Ronald Nazareth, College Registrar Dr Alwyn D’Sa, the Course Coordinator Prof. Edmund Frank and a good number of SACAA members.
St Aloysius is the 1st and only Jesuit University anywhere in the globe to hold such outreach programmes inside a prison. More than a course, these skill development programmes are aimed to awaken hope, restore dignity and prepare prison inmates to return to society as confident, skilled and responsible citizens after their release from prison and lead a life of dignity with their family members.
